Career crisis: You can survive
When you have to quit your job, it doesn’t mean that your life has no purpose anymore. If you find yourself in a situation of major career crisis, it's nasty.
Don’t feel that you're dependent on someone else to give you a new job or that you can just work through it.
The addicted2success.com website claims that even this crisis is an opportunity to reset your life. However, you need to get back in control. The sooner, the better.
What to do when you experience a career crisis
- Stop blaming others: Don’t point your finger at the company, senior managers, the strategy or anything else. That won't help. Mostly your own actions were to blame – maybe you're staying in the same position for too long.
- A career crisis is like a sinking ship: If you realize that the ship your career is on is sinking and there are holes everywhere, you have to stop waiting.
- Think ahead: It may be a long time between your decision to quit and getting to the next step. When it's finally time, don’t procrastinate. Run as fast as you can, since hanging around only makes your career crisis worse.
- Save yourself: No one is going to save you, no matter how much you engage in wishful thinking. If your industry is disappearing, others will want to save themselves. You're responsible for everything that happens in your career.
10% of people really want to help you
OK, you're not on your own. There will always be 10% of people around you who really do want to help.
- Worship these people.
- Show them your gratitude – send an email or call them from time to time.
- Follow up with them.
- Return the favor when they get into trouble, or at least make sure that they know they can ask you for help when they need it.
Never take the 10% that want to help you for granted. These kind people owe you nothing.
