Have you taken part in a selection process for a management position, but eventually been rejected? Did your old team boss leave, and even though you hoped you would be their successor, in the end someone else was promoted? Are you now thinking about what you did wrong? Here are the three most plausible reasons why things did not work out this time.
According to Forbes, the most important thing is to show you have what it takes to manage people. Many people may think this means you need to have managerial work experience. But that is not the case. You can show your ability to lead people also through activities outside work. Did you lead a successful project during your studies? Have you ever organised a social event? Have you worked as a supervisor at a summer camp or coached a sports team? You need to be able to sell all this experience in your CV and during an interview.
A manager must, above all, be an excellent team player. They must be able to forget their ego and support members of their team in their strengths. This is why you must show during the recruitment process that you have within you a genuine team spirit. Explain what you contributed to your team's success, how you helped others and how you are able to communicate even with people who are different from you.
Last but not least, it is necessary you possess the required hard (i.e. technical) skills that are essential to perform the role. You cannot be a manager of an IT development team if you know nothing about this area. Make sure you have the required knowledge and skills, and stress these sufficiently during the selection process.
