German utilities demand compensation for nuclear energy phase-out

German energy suppliers require billions of euros for losses caused by the shutdown of nuclear power plants. The biggest German energy company E.ON requires at least 8 billion euros. The total amount of compensation should reach 15 billion euros. The federal constitutional court in Karlsruhe will examine the compensation claim, the ruling can, however,  be expected in 2013 at the soonest. The court will first consult the case with both chambers of the German parliament and 63 other organizations. The constitutional court must first decide whether the German nuclear phase-out violated the constitution. Civil courts can then rule on possible damages.

E.ON said that he does not complain about the shutdown of nuclear power plants, a move widely supported by the German public, but about the lack of compensation for companies economically hit by the move.
