The US Department of Energy released plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for climate change impacts such as flooding, sea level rise, severe weather and temperature extremes. These plans detail how the Energy Department’s actions have already contributed to reducing the Federal Government’s greenhouse gas emissions by more than 17 percent since 2008.
By implementing energy efficiency measures and utilizing clean energy resources at Department facilities across the US, the Department of Energy has reduced direct greenhouse gas emissions by 34 percent since 2008.
The Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan, which outlines the steps the Department plans to take in order to integrate sustainability into all aspects of its mission, and the Climate Change Adaptation Plan, which serves as a tool to guide the Department’s response to the changing climate, are key components in the effort to build on the Department’s sustainability efforts to date.
