UK will not have enough electricity in 2025 if the coal and nuclear plants are closed

The UK Government plans to close all coal power plants by 2025. Most of UK’s nuclear power plants are nearing the end of their lifecycle. These factors together with the growing electricity consumption will lead to a 40 to 55% electricity supply gap.

There are plans to fill the gap by building Combined Cycle Gas Turbine plants. That would, however, be very difficult, because approximately 30 new gas power plants would have to be built in less than 10 years. In the last 10 years, only four gas power plants were built in the UK, because the UK does not have neither the resources nor skilled technicians to build power plants faster.

Electricity imports from Europe and Scandinavia will probably increase the electricity price and worsen energy security.
