Coloured overhead line conductors in Norwegian nature reserve

Statnett has energized new 68 kV overhead transmission line connecting central Norway to western Norway. Statnett is a power system operator owned by the state of Norway. In central Norway, there is an 8 TWh energy deficit. The new 420 kV line will transport surplus energy from western Norway to the region. 8.5 km of the new line goes through a protected natural reserve. Statnett has, therefore, used green conductors from Nexans.

Nexans has patented a treatment process which can be used to manufacture various types of conductors in various colours. This process has no negative effect on the aluminium wire composition, the conductors are easy to connect and the colour does not change while exposed to UV radiation. For the natural reserve, Nexans has manufactured green aluminium conductors which are more acceptable from the aesthetic point of view. The coloured conductors have of course undergone electrical and mechanical tests.
