Low-income earners can currently buy a traditional used car with a combustion engine for just a few hundred euros. Second-hand electric vehicles with prices like that won't be available for at least a decade. Germany and other countries offer subsidies to those buying new electric vehicles. So far, these bonuses have mostly been used by the wealthy. However, taxes on CO2 emissions will mainly impact lower-income people. Electromobility development and environmental protection can actually deepen social inequality. Subsidies should, therefore, only be available to lower-income earners.
