On Sunday February 20, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed started turbines at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the River Nile during a ceremonial launch. The Ethiopian government has so far invested approximatelly $2 billion in the project. When completed, it will ultimately cost about $5 billion and become the biggest hydropower plant in Africa with installed capacity of 5,150 MW.
