German energy companies E.ON and RWE have canceled their plans to build new nuclear power plants in Great Britain. Power plans were to be built on the Isle of Anglesey, and in Gloucestershire. E.ON and RWE established a joint venture, Horizon Nuclear Power, in 2009, and are now looking for a new owner, because of financial difficulties of their parent companies.
New nuclear power plants represent an integral part of the British government's strategy to provide enough energy after the existing nuclear power plants are retired and polluting coal-fired power plants are shut down. EDF Energy is interested in the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Hinkley Point.
