EU experts have conducted "stress tests" in European nuclear power plants. According to EU experts, nuclear power plants in Germany lack earthquake warning systems and the country is yet to implement international guidelines for serious accident.
EU experts have pointed out mainly to the following risks:
- High safety risk during maintenance, mistakes during maintenance
- No protection against airplane crashes
- Hazards caused by earthquakes and floods
The energy companies that operate Germany's nuclear power plants pointed out that hardly any of the facilities are in earthquake-prone areas. According to the industry spokesman, the German nuclear industry has adhered to all the all major safety guidelines.
In the past, several studies were conducted focusing on protecting the reactors against terrorists and airplane crashes. Power plant operators are keeping secret what measures have been taken, because such information is classified.
