ABB to produce solar PV inverters in South Africa

ABB plans to start production of inverters in South Africa to support the rapidly growing local photovoltaic market and meet requirements on certain share of locally manufactured components. ABB said it plans to open the new inverter production line at its existing facilities in Johannesburg in 2014.

ABB, which already produces solar inverters in Estonia, India and China and recently announced it is buying US inverter manufacturer Power-One Inc, will produce its PVS800 type of inverters in South Africa. The ABB inverter series, rated from 100 to 1000kW, which is designed for multi-megawatt photovoltaic power plants, is based on the company's frequency converter platform.
