Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, has published information on gross inland energy consumption in 2015. The European Union (EU) consumed 1 626 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe), which is 2.5% below its 1990 level and 11.6% below its record level in 2006.
Fossil fuels continue to represent the main energy source, although their share has constantly decreased over the past decades (from 83% in 1990 to 73% in 2015). However, over that period, EU dependency on imports of fossils fuels increased (73% imported in 2015 compared with just 53% in 1990).
