On 1 August 2020, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) successfully launched the Barakah nuclear power plant, becoming the first Arab country to produce nuclear energy. The $22.4 billion plant is being developed by a consortium led by the Korea Electric Power Corporation. There will be four reactors at the power plant, and when fully operational it will generate 5,600 megawatts of electricity – around 25% of the UAE's consumption. Commercial operation is planned for later this year.
