The installed capacity of wind farms increased by record 17 gigawatts in the European Union countries in 2023, but it is still not enough to reach the EU renewable energy goals. At least 37 GW of new wind power should be added per year, by the estimates of the European Commission. Europe's wind power sector had to struggle with soaring inflation, increased competition and bottlenecks getting permits for projects in the last few years. New EU rules slashing permit waiting times helped increase the number of permits issued last year.
