Responsibility of an external coach in the process of coaching corporate employees

The International Coaching Week (ICW, 5. - 11. February, 2012), organized annually by the International Coach Federation (ICF), stirred up a debate between Czech coaches and HR professionals regarding the responsibility of a coach for decisions and subsequent actions of coachees during or after the coaching process. This debate has of course existed for many years involving also other representatives of companies outside of HR who promote, use and also finance coaching.

Therefore, on one side of the barricade, there are HR professionals and customers with mostly well-defined developmental objectives and assignments for coaches who want the invested money to guarantee at least a minimum return on investment. On the other hand, there are professional coaches who are bound by certain rules and responsibilities.

The main point of the discussion on the responsibility of coaches lied in the concerns of HR professionals and customers arising from a possible loss of their employees due to coaching.

If we understand the fundamental function of coaching as a method of working with human potential, it is necessary to define strictly the responsibility of the parties involved. Consider the basic premise - the coach is responsible for the process, the result of coaching (including subsequent decisions and actions). That is the essence of the whole discussion.

For the coaching process to be effective and fully compliant with the standards of coaching, it is not perrmitted for the coach to be responsible for the coachees' decisions. This liability could not be affected either by the ordering party (management of a company, human resources department etc.). The customer may only affect the level of implmentation of coaching in the developmental activities of the organization, internal marketing and the competencess of the supervisors of the employees being coached when using a coaching managerial approach via an external coach.
