Information technology plays a critical role in business today and penetrates departments which are not inherently technical. This is also true for HR in relation to the rapid development of technologies for human capital management and measurement of various HR parameters of high interest for senior management.
Nobody wants you to get retrained as programmers or developers of mobile applications. It is about understanding the broader context of the possibilities to use information technology in HR and about building a closer relationship with IT. Both departments should learn to cooperate in order to make use of the right technologies to achieve common goals.
The sooner, the better
Even if your IT department is not able to create the HR system you need itself and you have to use the services of an external supplier, you should not leave IT out of the whole process. On the contrary, it is necessary to involve IT right from the start and decide on technical issues together.
When cooperating on projects focused on HR systems, you will not only find a final solution acceptable to both parties, but you will also learn to better understand each other. IT will learn to solve HR issues and perceive the overall HR strategy and its broader goals in the company. HR will gain a greater insight on available technologies and IT.
How closely do HR and IT cooperate in your company? What have you learned most recently about the latest developments in the field of IT?
