Dissatisfied with the lack of infrastructure in Silicon Valley, Facebook is planning to construct its own village for employees in the area of its headquarters in Menlo Park, California. The village will be called Willow Campus. The first part of the houses and shops should be completed at the beginning of 2021.
The aim is to provide up to 1,500 homes, along with shops and services, so that workers will not have to pay sky-high rents and endure long commutes to work.
Current rents are three times higher compared to 2011, while Silicon Valley house prices generally increased by more than $350,000 between 2012 and 2016. Meanwhile the past twelve months have seen Facebook more than double its staff and the current figure of 9,000 is expected to rise even further.
