Identifying a person coaching whom would only be a waste of time is easier than you might think, at least according to the world-renowned advisor and coach of top managers Marshall Goldsmith. In a recent article on LinkedIn, he summed up the following typical traits of uncoachable people. You can't fight against their arguments, so you should not start coaching them at all.
1. They don't see their problem
If someone isn't interested in changing, you won't change them. In short, such people don't think they have a problem and their behaviour suits them perfectly.
2. They promote a bad strategy for their company
According to Goldsmith, if a manager is already heading in the wrong direction, a coach can only help them reach their goal faster.
3. They are doing the wrong job
Some people are convinced they are working in the wrong position in the wrong company. If you ask them how they would feel if the company where they work suddenly closed, their answer would be "relief". They are unhappy, which, as a coach, you can't do anything about.
4. They only see problems in everyone else
Some managers look for coaches to help them change the behaviour of people around them. However, you can't do that. Helping someone who thinks they have no problem while everyone else is problematic, is impossible.
