Excellent managers will not deal with problems themselves on the team’s behalf. Instead, the problems are utilised for instructional purposes to increase the team’s awareness of problem-solving.
2. Avoiding micromanagement
Excellent managers ensure their staff have the necessary means to do their jobs, then allow them the freedom to get on with it and also experiment if they wish.
3. Creating a relaxed atmosphere
Excellent managers build a sense of trust so that that no one will be criticised, mocked or somehow punished by other team members for making a mistake or offering a suggestion.
4. Motivating others
Excellent managers are aware of the team’s potential and know how to motivate their employees psychologically in order to achieve the best results.
5. Knowing how to communicate
Excellent managers know how to listen as well as share their own ideas. They offer praise regularly but do not shirk from constructive criticism when required.
6. Supportive
Excellent managers suggest career options to team members and support them in advancing their careers.
7. Visionary
Excellent managers are clear about where they are heading and they explain what each team member’s responsibility is on that journey.
8. Technically adroit
Excellent managers understand the ins and outs of the work they are responsible for and the challenges faced by members of their team.
9. Collaborative
Excellent managers see the wider picture and seek advantages for the whole company. They will not adopt a silo mentality.
10. Decisive
Excellent managers are able to make difficult decisions and stand by them. They also ensure everyone knows why such decisions are necessary.
