Firing employees is hard but it is always harder to be fired. HR should therefore not worsen the situation of the employees being fired by inappropriate statements when saying "goodbye". The basic rule is not to show your emotions and treat them with the highest possible degree of respect. Inc.com summarized what not to say to a terminated employee.
1. "Look, this is really hard for me."
Your feelings are not relevant for the employee.
2. "We decided that we need change."
You are not at a press conference, cliches are not needed.
3. "I will tell you further details later."
The employee already knows that he was fired, there is nothing to wait for.
4. "In short, you did not manage your work so well as Peter."
Avoid any personal comparisons.
5. "Well, let's talk. I'll tell you why... "
Do not get drawn into a debate on the already resolved matter.
6. "You are a good employee but we simply have to cut staff."
If you really need to lay off, admit it and do not talk about performance.
7. "We both know that you are not happy with us."
It is not up to you to judge whether the person being fired will be grateful in the future.
8. "I have to escort you to the door."
Do not treat fired eymploees as criminals.
9. "We decided to dismiss you."
Do not hide behind "we."
10. "If I can do anything for you, please let me know."
Do not make promises that you cannot meet.
