E-learning in 2018 (1/2): Microlearning and gamification

The corporate e-learning market has been growing very quickly. Thanks to the rapid development of technology and innovation, e-learning has gained a solid place alongside traditional classroom training. This has been greatly helped by the use of mobile phones and tablets providing employees with easy access to educational content. What e-learning trends in companies can we expect in 2018?

The following e-learning trends for 2018 were published by elearningindustry.com.

1. Microlearning

This way of learning is based on the principle of dividing wider topics into short lessons lasting only a few minutes. The lessons may take the form of texts, videos, presentations, quizzes or various interactive formats, including games. Employees can learn at any time that suits them without being disturbed by it. It is easier to memorise new information this way than at long training sessions.

2. Mobile learning

Mobile devices enable us to learn anytime, anywhere. Today's young employees have grown up with mobile phones and are accustomed to short educational content. Companies can, however, also reach older generations of workers via mobile devices. This way of learning will help anyone who does not have time to spend long hours learning. We can expect many new mobile education formats.

3. Testing and knowledge sharing

Quizzes and tests have become regular parts of e-learning in order to show what we have learned in the various phases of studying the given topic. Along with these activities, the right answers are available, together with information on why they are right. Users can also communicate with each other and if they do not understand something or are unsure, they can ask. This effective way of learning, sharing and passing on knowledge in companies will continue to grow.

4. Game elements

E-learning is increasingly using the so-called gamification, i.e. inclusion of gaming elements in learning. And things will be no different in 2018. Practice clearly shows that the most common cause of unsuccessful e-learning is boring content. If you want to keep your employees' attention and interest during the learning process, you need more fun. Learning via playing games can take a variety of forms. Technology is no longer a problem today; the most important thing is good ideas.
