E-learning in 2018 (2/2): Social networks and virtual reality

The main trends in corporate e-learning that we can expect in 2018 include wider use of mobile devices, further development of so-called microlearning, and gamification. Employees will learn more often in short lessons using text, video or games, during the course of which they will also be able to check their knowledge through quizzes and tests. The social component of e-learning in the form of electronic communication between individual participants will also be strengthened.

Today we will look at the remaining three e-learning trends for 2018 as highlighted by elearningindustry.com.

5. Social learning

Social learning, which takes place in certain social conditions and situations when we interact with other people, is more effective compared to individual learning. Nowadays, e-learning means people no longer learn on their own. We have social networks, thanks to which there exist communities of people who support and motivate each other in learning. This is also a very strong trend which will further develop in 2018.

6. Virtual and augmented reality

Virtual reality replaces actual reality with simulation. You just put on VR glasses and find yourself in a completely different place. Augmented reality goes even one step further by connecting the virtual environment with the actual one. There is great potential for using these technologies, which are becoming cheaper every year, in e-learning. Employees can learn in virtual but very realistic environments. See how such training might look in an article entitled Put on your glasses and start learning.

7. Open systems

One universal solution for all companies is no longer sufficient even in the case of corporate Learning Management Systems (LMS). Each organisation has its own specific features and increasingly requires customised versions of both e-learning solutions and LMS as a whole. Therefore, another clear trend is the development of open source systems that can easily be adapted to the needs of companies.
