Getting ready for the first three months in a new job

The first three months in a new workplace decide your future success at the company. You are expected to learn company procedures, handle your work load and integrate into the team. That is why you should approach the start at your new job proactively. No matter what your job is, add the following to your list of tasks for the first three months:

1. Show interest in constructive criticism

Assure your boss that you want to hear feedback, even if it is negative. This will encourage him/her to communicate more with you and you will get more opportunities for improvement.

2. Do not lie about what you can do

Any lies you tell about skills that you actually do not have will be revealed very soon. Conversely, show your bosses the direction in which they should direct your future development.

3. Observe the company culture

Learn the communication style that your colleagues prefer.

4. Divide your goals

Ask your bosses to answer three fundamental questions: 1) What do they absolutely need you to complete during the first 90 days? 2) Where would they like you to exceed their expectations during the first 90 days? 3) During this time, what would they consider as absolutely excellent performance? Then stick to what you find out and try to accomplish as much of it as possible.

5. Update your profile on LinkedIn

Inform your network of professional contacts about your new job.

6. Become acquainted with the workplace logistics

Try to figure out how your new office works as soon as possible. Do not bother your colleagues with small things like where the copy machine is, for example. Find out yourself with the help of HR or IT.

7. Accept lunch invitations

Never turn your back on opportunities to become more closely acquainted with your new colleagues. Lunches are an ideal opportunity to establish closer relationships.

8. Do not gossip

Stick with the main goal of proving your qualifications. Even though communicating with colleagues, for example at lunch, is very important, try not to comment on awkward topics.

9. Show enthusiasm

Do not forget to smile and act enthusiastically. Even though there are difficult months ahead of you, stick with being positive.
