Do not promote a culture of fear in your company

There was a big corporation which was developing dynamically, but at the expense of its employees, who lived every day in fear of losing their jobs, of criticism or making mistakes. One day, however, a farsighted leader joined the company and effectively used his leadership to change and heal the crippled fearful corporate culture.

A nice idea, but it is not that easy. The same workplace that creates an unpleasant atmosphere and troubled employees is also home to individuals who like promoting a culture of fear with their inappropriate behavior, spreading slander or committing fraud.

You cannot blame everything on the environment of large corporations. Even smaller or non-profit companies may face similar problems. The dimensions of this phenomenon was discussed in the Management Issues website.

"Dirty little secret"

Most of us have learned to keep our fears a secret. Even those in a position of authority, who could make a difference, would often rather close their eyes to the problems. We do not want to ask a colleague to change his behavior, or point out a scam. "Hopefully if I say nothing no one will say anything about me," Instead we keep what we know to ourselves (or use it at the "appropriate" time, which is even worse). Most of us know when something is wrong or it is not what we really want.

What to do about it?

The solution begins with perceiving and accepting our fears and then with the courage to gradually start working with them. If you know that you are rather passive, afraid of conflicts or some what dishonest or less open than you would like to be, this is the first step to changing. The opposite of fear is courage. Do not be afraid to present authentically in situations despite your fear e.g. of gossip, criticism... You need to try it step by step. By helping yourself, you also help your team or department.

A few questions to ponder

  • Who or what prevents you from doing your job effectively?
  • Do you have a problem confiding in someone about your fears?
  • Are you able to openly admit your mistakes or rather do you conceal them?
  • Are you afraid to confront a serious problem in the workplace or face criticism?
  • Are you honest and open with others?
  • When was the last time you objected to improper behavior?
  • What would happen to you, if you changed the atmosphere of fear with small steps?

Fear has no purpose and by suppressing it ties you tighter. If you are hiding unfairness or rumours that are happening in the company, you just support those who are responsible. Sneakness certainly does not help you. It would be better for you to learn to be open to feedback and constructive criticism. Empathize, collaborate with colleagues, and respect the privacy and individuality of others. Only with gradual steps you may achieve gradual changes.
