Coffee and working morale: Should managers take barista courses?

Tight budgets are a common reality for many departments. Managers therefore need to choose wisely when deciding about how to motivate their subordinates. It seems that such an ordinary thing as coffee, offers a surprisingly high return on investment.

A substantial number of employees acknowledged that they feel much more motivated to do their best at their offices when they are provided with some perks – free good quality coffee being an example of one.

Small perks make a big difference

The website saleshq.monster.com reported that according respondents to a recent survey of employed Americans there is a strong link between benefits and the impact on the morale and productivity.

Dr. Bob Nelson (leading authority on workforce motivation, author of a best-seller and co-founder of Recognition Professionals International) confirms this relationship and also stresses the importance of recognition and reward for staff. Even a small thing counts. Further,according to Dr. Nelson, fresh and gourmet coffee available for free in the office is one of the highly desirable office perks.

There was another national survey in the USA (although conducted by a company that is a leader in brewing systems supplies) that found  that almost 40 % of employees would prefer the free daily coffee or tea option over an annual company party.

No need to study coffee varieties

There are quite a lot of companies that offer services and assistance connected to launching a good-coffee services. There are even ways to brew coffee directly over ice, which may come handy especially during the long hot days of summer.
