14 steps to success and mental strength (2/2)

The first part of our article on improving mental strength in order to achieve success stated that the most important thing is emotional intelligence. Furthermore, it is also important to be self-confident, which means having a real inner confidence rather than trying to hide uncertainty. Other essential abilities include dealing with negative people, accepting change, saying no, taking risks and learning from mistakes.

These are all habits you can start improving right now. And remember also the recommendations in this second part of the article, as originally published by Travis Bradberry, expert on emotional intelligence and author of a worldwide successful book entitled Emotional Intelligence.

8. Ability to maintain one's happiness

People who derive satisfaction from comparisons with others are not masters of their emotions. Mentally tough people do not let others take away their good feeling from what they have achieved.

9. Ability to let others feel happiness

A mentally strong person does not need to judge others and reduce their self-esteem. Do not waste time and energy on jealousy; instead, invest it in recognising other people. Celebrate their accomplishments.

10. Physical activity

Regular exercising gives us a sense of greater abilities and satisfaction. It also increases our self-confidence.

11. Sufficient sleep

When we sleep, our brain gets rid of toxic substances that arise while we are awake. A lack of sleep decreases our abilities of self-control, makes it difficult to concentrate and impairs our memory.

12. Lower caffeine intake

An increased intake of caffeine causes increased secretion of adrenaline, which leads the human brain to an accelerated kind of decision-making in the form of "flight or fight". Such a type of decision-making is useful in situations when one's life is at risk but not for everyday operations.

13. Forgiveness

Mentally strong people do not wait for an excuse to be able to forgive someone. They do not let themselves be consumed by negative experiences that happened a long time ago and may have an adverse effect on their physical and mental health.

14. Positive attitude

Just by listening to the news you can easily get the feeling that the world is rushing towards destruction. The question is: can you influence it? Mentally strong and successful people do not get unnecessarily stressed by things they can't influence.
