An executive car not only fit for failed managers

The Skoda Superb has been produced since 2001 and has been one of the most popular and top- rated European executive cars from the very beginning. Today, not only Czech managers drive the third generation of this car. In first five months of 2016, Škoda Auto, the car's producer located in Mlada Boleslav, sold more than 18,000 Skoda Superbs to wholesale buyers, which is 30% more than last year. In this article we will focus on how the Skoda Superb is assessed by Europe's leading car magazines.

Škoda Superb 3. generace

The third generation of the Skoda Superb has been on the market since 2015. In the same year, the car won the Czech Company Car of the Year award in the category of executive cars. This year, it became the Czech Car of the Year. It is produced with both petrol and diesel engines with the capacity of 1.4 to 2 liters. Several versions are equipped with a four-wheel drive system. You can drive it using both manual and automatic transmission. The base price starts at CZK 600,000.

Regarding the equipment, four levels are available. A 2.0 Skoda Superb with the highest, "Laurin & Klement" level of equipment (the most expensive navigation, adaptive cruise control, heated windshield, parking assistance, rearview camera, and leather interior with LED lighting), is sold for more than CZK 1.3 million.

A lot of space, little fun

The British magazine Auto Express highlights the "fragile" design of Skoda Superb, its safety technology and large trunk. The car, though cheaper, is a match for more expensive executive cars such as the BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E-Class, according to the magazine. On the other hand, Auto Express criticized the car's emissions exceeding 100 g / km, its three-year warranty and less-than-perfect qualities during fast cornering. Nevertheless, the Skoda Superb received all 5 out of 5 possible points.

The Skoda Superb also earned the full number of points by the What Car? website. The only things the website did not like about the car was that it isn't fun to drive, the diesel engines are too growly and the slow shifting in the GreenLine versions.

The British weekly newspaper The Telegraph likened the comfort of the Skoda Superb to a Rolls Royce. The car was given 9 points out of 10. The Telegraph criticized a difficulty in estimating the length of the car from the driver's seat, a slightly higher fuel consumption and the fact that some assistance features are not included, but counted as extras. The car received only 6 out of 10 points in the "fun to drive" category.

Czech national pride versus British sarcasm

The Top Gear magazine gave the Skoda Superb 8 of 10 points. The only criticism was about the car's reactions in quick cornering. Interestingly, however, a much bigger critique came from the presenter of the show, Jeremy Clarkson, after he left the show. In a review for the Sunday Times newspaper, he wrote that this car had "the same amount of soul as a fridge freezer". A typical Skoda Superb driver was likened to a failed manager who, after losing his job, prefers driving this car as a taxi driver over sitting at home and watching television with a wife he doesn't love. He awarded the Skoda Superb only two out of five possible stars.

Czech magazines and specialized websites mostly evaluate the Skoda Superb as a very good car which has taken a large shift compared to its predecessor. The car, which is also driven by the Czech president and other senior government officials stands out thanks to its modern design, technology and ample space in both the saloon and wagon versions. "Mozart would have loved this station wagon. He could take all the instruments of a smaller orchestra and frantically conduct while driving throughout the journey," wrote autoforum.cz.

"Our 186 cm tall editor first set up the driver's seat in a position he considered optimal for driving. Then he sat on the rear seat behind the driver. There were 22 centimeters left in front of his knees and an excellent nine centimeters above his head. Even a six-foot young man who took part in the test had 4 centimeters of space over the top of his head," wrote auto.cz.
