Monster.com: Monstrous rise and fall of a job portal

Microsoft bought the professional social network LinkedIn in June 2016. The value of the transaction amounted to $ 26.2 bn. Another major acquisition on the online labor market came along two months later. The Dutch recruitment company Randstad announced in early August that it would buy Monster Worldwide. The final agreement on the takeover of the once legendary job portal Monster.com has been calculated at the total amount of $ 429 million. Yes, you did your math correctly. Randstad bought Monster for less than 2 percent of the price Microsoft paid for LinkedIn.

The worldwide online job market is moving in a clear direction. Traditional job boards are not able to face the pressure from social networks. Monster was the largest and most popular online job search engine in the world at the turn of the millennium. At the time of its greatest success in 2000, it reached market capitalization of $ 8.4 bn. The company, however, couldn't keep pace with the development of social networks, especially LinkedIn, which now has more than 430 million users. Monster began to lose its users and advertisers, and its market value as well. This trend has been especially noticeable in the last five years. Look at it in terms of Monster's and LinkedIn's financial indicators.
