Don’t ignore good advice – but don’t swallow everything immediately

Experts are here to give us guidance. They can tell what's important from what isn’t. You can ask them, and they will help you to see what really matters.

Thanks to their knowledge, they know how to identify the important things. However, sometimes a brave person decides to ignore what experts say and tries something new – and succeeds, against all odds. Strange, isn't it?

So you may be using expert advice to make better business decisions. True experts in their fields are often highly inspiring and helpful to the rest of us. At least – most of the time. Often we can't really follow every piece of advice we hear from the experts, and that's life.

But what do you do when you strongly disagree with the advice? You can consider imagining possible scenarios and choose a compromise of some kind – that means following the advice only to certain degree.

Use these questions to check any advice you get.

1) Is it aligned with your current opinions and beliefs?

If you agree immediately with what the advisor says, you usually think it's good advice. But watch out – when someone confirms what you're doing, he or she strengthens you ego – and naturally that's pleasant, according to an article on the management-issues.com website.

2) Do you immediately dismiss the advice?

When you think that the claims of an expert are just ridiculous, you have to ask why you think it's ridiculous. If you can explain, then that's all right. But if you can't, you should examine the advice again.

3) Do you need to change your mindset to accept the advice?

If the advice needs you to profoundly change your behavior, it may be stressful for you. If you're sure that the advice is good, try to change your mindset slowly and incrementally.
