Is your mindset agile or anti-agile? (2/2)

The previous article described how the agile approach evolved and what to ask in order to recognise whether you are supporting it in your organisation. Why should you do this? Because being agile is necessary in a world of constantly changing conditions.

Agile working means empowering people and breaking down barriers. There is less of a hierarchy in teams since diverse ideas are appreciated. Your employees can then become more proactive and they will feel more connected to your organisation.

Now think for a moment about these dangerous statements. And do so with caution: they may reveal something really important for your future success.

Do the following descriptions apply to you? If so, then you are not so agile-minded.

  • You don’t share information and instead withhold it.
  • You behave defensively when your ideas are challenged.
  • You get angry when someone finds you made a mistake. Or you don’t encourage colleagues to share their feedback.
  • You delay taking action because you are not yet absolutely certain about what the outcome will be.

Make agile working a reality

Do you know what skills you and your team will need in the next few years? One of them definitely will be the ability to develop an agile mindset in other people.

Your intentional behaviour as well as learning (both formal and informal) can be used in order to foster an agile mindset, according to an article on the management-issues.com website. Then your team will be able to:

  • question the status quo and recognise new opportunities
  • cope with ambiguity and not get lost even amidst constant changes
  • handle new, unknown situations well
