A freelancing career: Where are you heading next?

Freelancing means freedom and independence for many people. This autonomy is very refreshing, but it comes at a cost. You're alone when making critical decisions. One of these decisions is setting your own career course. Once you're a freelancer, there’s no HR, so forget about guidance or support. Your ambitions  and goals are now up to you, and you only.

How do successful freelancers deal with it?

They know that they have to manage uncertainties effectively. So they begin with looking within, because high self-awareness enables them to know clearly who they are.

Then they set their goals, and also think about reasons why they choose to accomplish those particular goals. Because they have a clear sense of who they are, they choose goals that are realistic. That's really helpful for identifying your career outlook.

Still, freelancing is dynamic in its nature, meaning that from time to time, fresh perspectives and evaluations are needed.

Rethink your values and purpose

For freelancers, terms like values, purpose, career and success suddenly have new meaning. Everyone is advised to examine them carefully, because if freelancing is what you made a career switch for, chances are that you need to reframe almost everything you've believed in.

A career in the traditional sense may not be a useful concept for you anymore, warns an article published by Center for Creative Leadership.

What to do next?

Freelancers need to develop their core purpose statement. However, everything can't be done on their own. Therefore they need to build a strong network and connect with others.

Then they can discuss various career decisions and contemplate different approaches. They can also find mentors, who can provide them with clear, unbiased feedback.
