Inspiration (2/2): A grain of new perspective will suffice

The previous article described something that seems incredible: short get-togethers or videos can have a profound impact on our lives.

Yet the fact is that all of us have at some time in our lives seen a film, listened to a TED talk or had a conversation over coffee, during which we discovered a subtle insight that, in the long run, proved life-changing for us. Even if there was no action plan or no reinforcing reminders, this experience changed us for the better, according to an article at psychologytoday.com.

The impact of inspiration may have longevity. What was mentioned in the previous article suggests we should consider inspiration in another light: it is more than just a temporary burst of understanding, commitment and emotions.

A question or a mere hint is often enough

The seed of inspiration may be buried by our to-do lists and mundane responsibilities; however, that does not mean it has disappeared completely. It is still there somewhere, and growing. It may be slowly altering our deepest beliefs about who we think we are. It is enough for it to have been a mere proposition of a new perspective. The result is our new behaviour. We start performing better and seeing results in the real world.

Skill set and mindset

Motivational speakers, TED talks and short videos can never solve all our problems. A one-off insight will not turn you into a successful person. Mastering new skills still requires training and conscientious practice – and, above all, time.

However, a skill set is not the same thing as a mindset. A mindset is what motivates and encourages us. It is something which urges us to pursue meaningful goals and not dwell on failure.

One thing which is important to know is that one's mindset can be changed by a brief encounter. A thought provoking question posed at a tough time can be enough to produce a major outcome. Mindsets are what we can shift when we tell or hear stories of resilience and struggle.
