The luxury of relaxing on vacation

Vacation is a time of lower mental activity when we can enjoy moments of significantly lower stress. It feels good for a while to stop planning, analysing and working in general.

Nowadays, however, the division between work and leisure is often blurred. We work even at times that should be devoted to leisure. Who or what is to blame for this? Smartphones are the key channel via which work can pursue us even if we are on vacation abroad.

You need a proper vacation

We shouldn’t sacrifice our privacy and regard the loss of our relaxation time as something normal and necessary. But how to establish the boundary between work and leisure?

Do take a vacation. Many people fear that if they are not connected at weekends or they go on a long vacation, it will have a negative impact on their work. But by not taking a break, you risk being constantly stressed out, overworked and after some time also overwhelmed.

If having a vacation is not a part of your lifestyle, the consequences can be alarming:

  • Stress-related illnesses
  • Dysfunctional families
  • Decreased productivity at work (also as a consequence of the first two points above)
  • You became disengaged, your performance declines and you feel permanently exhausted
  • Depression, addiction, rising anger

Reflect on the following questions

  • When was the last time you had what could be called a proper vacation?
  • How do you prepare for your vacation?
  • How are the first days after your return to work?
  • What did you discover about yourself on your last vacation?
  • What were vacations like when you were growing up?

If the answers to these questions are not what you would consider normal, it would probably be wise to revise your attitude to vacations. This is the conclusion of an article at management-issues.com.
