Schedule key tasks

Before opening your inbox in the morning, plan your day according to what is really important: your work tasks, important phone calls, etc. Then distinguish these items in your inbox as well. Use labels and folders to identify important, high-priority activities and simple tasks. If you can delegate some activities, do so straightaway. Unread e-mails will not stress you so much.

First: solve the most challenging task

During your working hours, block space for the most important task you will devote yourself to that day. Get started and don't be distracted by anything else. Set aside time for other duties afterwards.

Remember your purpose

The foundation on which everything is built must simply be solid. Follow the strategy and goals that are important to you. Before doing something, ask yourself why it's really important. Are you trying to impress someone else? Do you want to prove to someone that they are wrong? Or do you just want to uncheck something from a nonsensical to-do list? Work only on your own version of success and follow the direction you care about.

Sleep resets your brain. While you slumber peacefully, your mind stores and organises your thoughts and memories so you can start the new day afresh. It is advisable to start the morning by writing down facts that are completely obvious to you and which you believe. These may vary from week to week but overall they will be consistent. By keeping a similar diary over time, you will gain a much better awareness of who you are and what you stand for, and you will not have so much difficulty in prioritising your work and tasks.

Set your thoughts

Before checking your e-mail, decide what kind of day you want and who you want to be. Commit to this and accept the fact you will probably encounter unpleasant tasks or incompetent people during the day. Don't be influenced by them: they are external factors that don't really matter.

Be aware that your inbox can wait until you're clear about your organisation and priorities. Then nothing will throw you off course.
