Micro-management by the manager

Every worker should have some space for their own initiative, creativity and innovation. An employer should trust their employees and allow them a certain freedom. If employees feel their manager is micro-managing and following their every step, it is very demotivating.

Bureaucracy and unsuitable technologies

One of the most frustrating and demotivating things an employee can encounter at work is insufficient, non-functional or irrelevant technologies which create more of an obstacle than they help the employee in their work.

Regular employees have no say

As Gallup.com states, the inability to influence anything and insufficient attention paid to employees, their ideas and comments, are among the most common reproaches of employees towards employers.

Inability to influence one's own job

It should be possible for individual employees to influence the criteria applied in assessing and rewarding work. If, for instance, someone is assessed solely on the basis of company results as a whole, something over which they have minimal influence, it is extremely demotivating.

Dysfunctional communication

Effective and unambiguous communication is essential to effective work. By setting up internal communication correctly, you may not only achieve better results, but also motivate employees better as they know what is going on, what they should do, and they have all the necessary information.

Absence of flexibility

An employer who values their employees also trusts them and allows them a certain flexibility, especially in connection to the personal and work-life balance. If a company does not offer any flexibility to employees, it sends a signal that the company does not value them.
