How always to find something positive in anything you do

We all probably know that motivation and engagement have a major impact on our productivity and effectiveness. If we don't enjoy doing something and consider it useless, this will definitely have a negative impact on the result. Unfortunately, in real life we frequently have to do things we are not completely comfortable with. Managers know this well: they often have to implement changes and rules that come from senior management without being fully aligned with these ideas. But there is a way to find something positive in everything you do.

Do not talk (or think) negatively about what you do

When you have to do something you are not completely comfortable with but you still want to do a good job, you must not speak negatively about the given task. This applies not only to outward communication, namely when talking to subordinates, colleagues or acquaintances: it also applies to your internal, intrapersonal communication. You should not internally grumble about the task at hand; you must not repeat to yourself why you find the work unnecessary and you have to avoid a negative attitude. By endlessly repeating something and thinking about it constantly, you tend to reinforce that opinion in your mind. Therefore, if you want to change your view of a particular task, you must first get rid of your own negative perception of it. Or at least not comment on it.

Find something you enjoy about the task

Every task contains something to enjoy. Sometimes it is something very trivial and sometimes it is hard to find. But there is something enjoyable to be found in every project or task. Try to find that favourite part of your task, define it, and then focus on it. If possible, spend more time on this favourite part than on the less pleasant bits.

Use gamification

Gamification, namely the addition of game elements into work, often works like a charm for unpopular or boring tasks. People are by nature competitive and always enjoy surpassing either themselves or others. For example, if you have to put products into boxes, you can try to outdo yourself every hour. You can try different packing methods, compare them and see which is the most effective. You can compete with colleagues. All these competitive elements will make the task more enjoyable. Implement elements of play into what you do. And if it is a team task, use gamification to organise the work of your subordinates.
