Four tips on designing a superb team building event

Team building events are an excellent opportunity not only to have fun and enjoy yourself, but also to strengthen relations between colleagues and practise the internal procedures of the team. Here are four tips on how to plan a team-building so that it does not turn into a fiasco and your team genuinely benefits from it.

Tip 1: Consider team members' preferences

As Presentation Magazine states, many managers tend to plan events for their team based on their own preferences. However, for the event to be successful, the manager needs to put aside their own ego and personal preferences. The ideas for the event must come from the attendees themselves. Only then will your subordinates be sufficiently engaged and your team building truly effective.

Tip 2: Involve subordinates in planning  the event

Do not do everything yourself. The planning phase is also part of the team building. Moreover, bearing in mind the first tip, it is a good idea to let your subordinates decide about the details. So assign them tasks and let them plan the team building based on their own preferences.

Tip 3: Have backup plans ready for crisis scenarios

Not everything will always work out the way you imagine. In order to ensure your team-building event does not go completely wrong, you should have alternative plans ready for crisis scenarios: for example, if the weather does not work out, if a key person falls sick, etc.

Tip 4: Get feedback from participants after the event

After the event, you should learn from both what went wrong and what worked well. Get feedback from participants. What would they do differently next time? Did you achieve what you wanted with the team building? Take this feedback into account when planning the next event.
