Are you moving your team forward or backward?

Each team member holds several informal roles in addition to his formal one. That is moving the team's work either forward or backward. Whether you are in charge of the whole team or just one of its members, you should know which behavior is beneficial and which is not.

Center for Creative Leadership summarized the beneficial and harmful team roles in its regular newsletter. If you hold one of these roles, you are dragging your team down:

  • aggressor,

  • big ego that needs recognition,

  • entertainment lover who cannot concentrate,

  • manipulator,

  • conflict avoider,

  • constant problems retriever,

  • interrupter of others who want to express their views,

  • possessor of all work,

  • inveterate yes-man.

These roles, on the other hand, activate the team and lead it to better performance:

  • observer,

  • cheer-leader,

  • strategist,

  • facilitator,

  • master in completing tasks,

  • time keeper,
  • investigator of conflicts,

  • devil's advocate,

  • truth teller,

  • romantic who can remind people of their dreams during difficult times.
