Milestones of individual leadership development

When managers work on projects, they set individual milestones to help them watch how the project progresses and what is still ahead of them. However, when working on developing their leadership, they often do not have any indicators of the progress and success or they have just indicators related to positions. If this is your case, read the following milestones that will offer you a broader view on the development of your leadership skills.

1. Understanding that leadership is not a role, but behavior

You become a leader when others voluntarily decide to follow you. When you reach this milestone, you realize that as a leader you can influence the course of things - not to usurp power but to intervene when it is needed to achieve major changes.

2. Emerging leader

The entry into a leadership role is a very important milestone. Even though you know it is not about the role but about your acts, the start in the leadership role and gradually revealing its complexity is the foundation of your successful growth and development.

3. Leader of Leaders

Another milestone is the point when you are not a starting leader anymore and other leaders turn to you for advice. This is a great opportunity to learn for you.

4. Coach and mentor to others

Another milestone comes at the time when others (not just leaders) no tonly follow you but actively seek your advice. This is a great recognition for you - not a reason for arrogance and overconfidence - and also an opportunity to realize what you know and what not and think about the complexity of leadership.

5. Understanding that leadership is not about you

The final milestone is to understand a behave according to the fact that leaderhip is not about a specific leader, but about his followers, his organization and its goals, customers and communities they all live in. At this stage, you understand that your work has a deeper meaning.
