Ten tips for everyday recognition

Managers often complain that they do not have enough time to show their recognition to their staff. However, showing employees that you value them and that they are doing a good job does not take very much time at all. All you have to do is make sure your working day includes ten elements which make it perfectly clear that you support a culture based on personal recognition. The tips were published on the Incentive Magazine website.

1. Thank job applicants

Start right at the beginning with applicants for a position in your team by thanking them in a personal message.

2. Hand out thank-you cards

When a new member comes to your team, hand them their personalised thank-you cards and instruct them to give them to people who help them.

3. Start the day with recognition

Before you begin wading through the flood of e-mails, send out several personal messages thanking people. That will start your and others’ day on an up-beat.

4. Start staff meetings with praise too

You know very well that if you plan to express recognition at the end of a meeting, you will usually not get round to it.

5. Share real experiences

Hold short meetings to share positive information. For instance, cite examples of great customer service which you have witnessed with your own eyes.

6. Use the intranet

Make sure that the section devoted to recognition of employees is located immediately on the home page of the intranet.

7. Win over top management

Examples from above have the greatest value. So win over ambassadors for your recognition programme amongst members of top management.

8. Use all communication channels

Show your recognition to your staff by using all available communication channels from newsletters, through posters to television spots.

9. Give recognition whenever the opportunity arises

When someone praises a member of your team to you, pass on the praise in person. Do not ignore small things which improve your work together without recognition and praise.

10. Ask yourself how many people you have praised today

Every day, set aside a moment for giving in-person or written thanks to several people around you.
