Being a leader is not easy. It requires smart decisions in both technical matters and the ability to develop the potential of the people around you. "The good news is that you don't have to be a born leader to be an effective leader," writes Peter Economy, author of more than 60 books focused on management, on Inc.com. "To get from good to great, or even poor to great [leader], build these six practices into your daily routine."
1. Concentrate on your people
Discover their talents and limitations then provide them the necessary tools and encouragement. Listen to them and respect their efforts. Ask what motivates them.
2. Believe in common sense
The most important tool a leader has is his own common sense. Listen to your inner voice and follow your sense of fairness and honesty.
3. Reward with caution
Clearly tell your people what you expect of them and always acknowledge their efforts. However, reward only for exceeding your expectations.
4. Create a pleasant working atmosphere
Do you like your job? How about your people, do they look forward to a positive atmosphere full of constructive energy? The energy in the workplace is highly contagious. That is why you should be sure it is not negative.
5. Set a good example
Do not tell others what to do. Lead them by your own behavior. To achieve any change, you must start with yourself.
6. Support change
Welcome change and the new opportunities that come with them. Teach your people that nothing lasts forever.
