Do you value your time?

The question of whether you value your time may seem nonsensical. If somebody asked you this question, you would surely answer "yes, very much". However, words are one thing and actions are another. Do your actions show that your time is precious and others should not take it from you?

"When you let others take your time, you are in essence saying that your time isn’t valuable," writes Craig Jarrow alias the Time Management Ninja on his blog. He says that time is like money and you do not let others to take your money. He draws attention to some typical cases when our actions show others they can interrupt us anytime.

1. You nod to everything

When you agree to any and all demands, you will not be able to focus on your priorities. If you have not learned to say no yet, it's high time to start practicing assertive behavior.

2. You get interrupted in your work

You are working on an important task while ringing phones, pop-up e-mails and insistent colleagues are all around you. You should pay a maximum of 3 minutes of your time and concentration to these distractions. If you need absolute peace and quiet, close the door and turn off the phones.

3. You are constantly available

You do not always have to respond to e-mails or phone calls immediately. If you do so, others will get used to it very quickly. You should focus on the people and tasks that are most important to you right now.

4. You do not respect schedules

For example, at meetings you let the participants speak regardless of the schedule. As a result, you fill your days with meetings without being able to do your job. Try to set clear time boundaries and you will see how others will try to use your (and their) time more efficiently.

5. You ignore tardiness

If you do not mind someone coming to a meeting or a scheduled appointment fifteen minutes late, it will soon become the norm. Do your stuff on time and teach others to do their stuff on time. If someone does not come on time, reschedule the appointment at another time which suits you.
