Authenticity is a valuable and rare characteristic admired by many. Authenticity can also spur creativity: it inspires people and encourages them to share the most remarkable thing they can offer to others, namely their true self. Yet an article on the business2community.com website states that a majority of professionals are more comfortable being hidden rather than standing out. It is difficult to be truly authentic. But when we do see it, we applaud it.
Conformity begins in childhood
Authentic people and brands have succeeded in overcoming the fear of breaching social conformity. We are taught from a very early age how to behave properly: socially acceptable norms and correct ways of dressing, talking and interacting with others become embedded in our minds so that the difference between right and wrong is defined in a rather strict manner. Gradually, we learn that stepping out of line is not desirable. We cannot express all our thoughts aloud; nor can we always behave as we might like. We are advised to conform to what we think is desirable and right in the eyes of others.
Speak using your own voice
Try to break out of the well-worn conventions, even if it is no easy task. A pure and honest form of expression can inspire other people. Stop constantly wondering what your colleagues will think and whether they are going to like it or not. The urge to conform is strong but it can be overcome. For a start, you can try something new and unconventional: say what you really think at a meeting, read aloud a poem you have written, start a personal blog or make someone a daring proposal. The world is no richer if we are all alike. We need creative people who are not ashamed of their own feelings and ideas. Authentic people inspire those around them.
