Study: What sort of leadership behaviour should we strive for?

An extensive study conducted by McKinsey, with researchers examining academic papers as well as surveying over 189,000 people around the world, has shown that there are four extremely important leadership traits. The study suggests these areas of leadership should be prioritised when preparing leadership development. What are the four cornerstones of good leadership, which make the difference between the weakest and the strongest leadership performance?

1. Effective problem solving

Before a decision is made, there is intensive problem solving. Information needs to be gathered and analysed. Key inputs into decision-making with regard to both strategic and daily problems and issues depend on the quality of problem solving.

2. Considering different perspectives

Leaders who do things right are able to avoid many prejudices and base their decisions on a proper analysis. They can tell what is an important or unimportant topic; they monitor trends that affect their organisation and are actively looking for ideas from their employees on how to improve performance. They know when to listen to the concerns of stakeholders.

3. Strong orientation on results

Not only developing and crafting visions for the future but also getting there is the trait that separates greatness from mediocrity. Such leaders know how to prioritise work that brings the greatest value and they tend to be interested in the importance of productivity and efficiency in everything they do.

4. Being supportive

Supportive leaders sense how others around them feel. They show authenticity and a sincere interest in each individual member of their team; they do not display indifference towards anyone. They are able to allay fears about external threats and can mitigate and solve internal conflict, so that it does not drain too much energy from their employees.
