How law firms can evolve: Story of a big transformation (3/3)

Lawyers are sometimes thought to believe that they are the center of universe. However, when even partners understand how important is to work together, it enables the law firm to solve the much more complex problems its clients face. Clients see this strategic value as a means of solving new problems.

Senior partners are now trained to ask more questions. These questions may even be outside their core expertise. Answers to such questions help to reveal the client’s business problems and enable them to align their services better, claims the mckinsey.com website.

Collaboration may move legal firms to consulting

Sometimes technology and data visualization are equally as important as legal expertise. You simply cannot solve certain business problems without broader capabilities and the willingness to deploy them. Often more projects arise from the initial legal issue. A project aimed at helping to orchestrate the client’s activities across the globe to meet critical deadlines appeared after the initial issue of keeping track of awarded licenses was solved. And surprisingly, sometimes the deepest desire of a client’s managers is to have better life. With more efficient processes, they don’t need to worry about work as much. To succeed, you need to listen to what your clients need. Ask them and then show them some small victories.

No longer only vendors of legal services

The change is in the way the team works. It is simply a matter of how the firm operates. Being a really good, old-fashioned lawyer is no longer enough. People need to solve different problems with new and different solutions. Multidisciplinary backgrounds are now appreciated. Statistics and law? That is the kind of mixture that is highly desirable nowadays. The only way law firms are able to provide more diverse solutions is with people with diverse backgrounds.
