Manage and lead. These two words clearly define the activities of managers and leaders. While a manager manages, a leader leads. And while every leader can be a manager, not every manager can be a leader. In order to become a successful leader you need to shift your managerial skills to the next level. According to a survey by the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL), organisations most of all lack the following leadership skills.

Ability to inspire commitment

Who inspires commitment? Managers who publicly recognise the achievements of their people know what motivates them to perform at their best and reward them accordingly.

Ability to lead people

This category includes the ability to delegate tasks, offer employees new possibilities, treat them fairly and choose the right talent for your team.

Strategic planning

Put simply, this refers to the ability to translate a vision into a business strategy. More specifically, it means being able to plan long-term goals and balance them with immediate needs.

Change management

Strong leaders welcome changes and help their organisation to adapt to them as easily as possible. They adjust plans, involve others in the changes and help them overcome their resistance to change.

Ability to develop people

This ability is based on coaching employees to improve their performance. Leaders help their staff to understand their roles and further develop their careers.

Self-reflection

Leaders must know their strengths and weaknesses. They must be able to accept feedback, admit their own mistakes and learn from them.
