What does it mean to be mentally strong?

Successful people are usually mentally strong. Acquiring this skill is, however, not easy and does not happen overnight. It requires a long-term effort to improve yourself every day, to be optimistic, but at the same time not to set unrealistic goals.

Do you want to know how mentally strong you are? BusinessInsider.com asked psychologist Amy Morin, the author of a world-famous book entitled 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do, how we can recognise an exceptionally mentally strong person. According to Morin, such people display the following behaviour traits.

  • They know how to balance emotions with logical reasoning.

  • They don't waste time on unproductive activities such as making excuses or complaining.

  • They understand the importance of change and invest their energy in adapting.

  • They fight personal fears that prevent them getting ahead.

  • They are able to learn from their own mistakes and difficult life situations.

  • They respect themselves for who they are while trying constantly to improve.

  • They help others to succeed and celebrate their achievements with them.

  • They make decisions based on their life values and priorities.

  • They are responsible for their own decisions and actions.

  • They are realistic optimists. They believe in the better things in life but don't become blinded by too much optimism.

  • They focus only on things they can influence.

  • They don't only talk about problems; they come up with solutions.

  • They are open to learning from everybody around them in every situation.

  • They don't try to hide their shortcomings but work on improving.
