Social gatherings, meetings of professionals, conferences and similar events are a great way to deepen your relationship with your current business partners, to network and to learn about the news in your sector. But only if you do not spend the whole evening talking to one person, some really talkative people can pose a threat. To use the time you have at networking events as efficiently as possible, you need to learn to end conversations with grace.

1. Summing up

If you want to finish a conversation, sum up the information you exchanged with the other person, repeat what you learned and thank that person for taking the time to talk to you.

2. Give a specific reason why you are leaving

Do not give vague or empty reasons, such as "I have to go". Give concrete, specific reasons why you are not able to spend more time with the on-going conversation. If it is possible, be honest.

3. Suggest the next step

If you are really interested in your partner and the conversation, suggest some follow-up steps.  Let them know that unfortunately you do not presently have time, but let them know at what event you might meet in the future, or suggest a meeting.

4. Introduce someone

Another option is to "replace" yourself with someone else. Introduce your partner, a friend or a colleague, and explain in a few words what both of them do and let them talk.

5. Do not insult

Never be rude or insulting, even if that person was boring you to death. You never know what contacts you might need some time.
