Changing styles of executives: Effective leaders are team players (2/2)

Illustration

The previous article described how many executives do not understand themselves and are often unaware of the impact their actions have on others. But that is not all. Many over-achievers constantly doubt whether they are good enough and ask themselves if they are really up to the job. In times of stress executives can regress very quickly to harmful management styles. They can and must find ways to cope with stressful experiences by getting to know themselves better, according to the management-issues.com website.

Autocratic behaviour on display

Some managers become more narcissistic in their behaviour in an effort to convince themselves and everyone else that they are truly special. This can lead to hubris and irresponsible actions. Some executives resort to an alpha male style of leadership. In order to avoid this, managers might focus on conscious and unconscious behaviour as well as rational and irrational actions, thereby learning better to pre-empt irrational and dysfunctional processes in their companies. They will also be capable of recognising these processes and initiating change.

Leadership has become a team sport

As the world is changing, so is leadership. It is no longer defined by a single leader's actions but rather by an ability to collaborate, motivate and manage networks. In other words, leadership has become a team sport. Today it is all about the way people think, feel and behave. In all these aspects it is important to be responsible. Strong leadership requires continuous development: clever people do not necessarily become wise quickly.
