In an article at changeboard.com, an IMD Business School professor Marco Mancesti suggests one method for assessing the harmony of a team, using a five-point framework known as PIKES – Purpose, Integration, Knowledge, Ecosystem, Self. The first part of this article offers a brief description of each of these individual elements.
Purpose
This refers to the individual motivation of team members. It may be different in each case but it must be present; otherwise the team is in danger of disintegrating as soon as a crisis appears.
Integration
Team members need to be aware of the cohesive elements that unite the group. It is particularly important that new members appreciate what binds the team together, whether it be a question of specific rules or a generally accepted, albeit unwritten, set of cultural norms and values.
Knowledge
Workers obviously need to be completely familiar with the technical side of the job but they must also be capable of innovation and finding original solutions to problems. Teams short on imagination will experience difficulties when dealing with tough issues.
Ecosystem
Employees should be able to see beyond the team itself and embrace the bigger picture, including both the company as a whole and the relevant branch of business in general. This will increase stability and lead to better collaboration all round.
Self
This aspect receives less attention than it would deserve. It is crucial that team members understand their own emotions and are capable of dealing adequately with stress. Otherwise any or all of the above four elements may be endangered.
